Excellent Third Pattern Mills Cartridge Belt W/1887 Militia Plate
Price: 650

An excellent plus specimen of this Third Pattern Mills rifle cartridge belt (45 loops) fitted with the Anson Mills-designed US Pattern 1887 Militia Plate. The belt, though showing no use, has unit marks on the back. The long belt ends originally had whipped or wrapped tips but only one tip now shows any evidence of that though both are unfrayed.

This is the belt plate that has been widely forged and I discuss both the originals and the forgeries in my book AMERICAN MILITARY AND NAVAL BELTS, 1812-1902. This pattern plate is shown and discussed on pages 277 and 278 of AMNB.

An excellent, nearly unused specimen of this 1887 period plate and belt from my own research collection.
