Near New M1873 Entrenching Tool aka. Hagner Tool
Price: 475

From an old collection, this M1873 Entrenching Tool is as close to new as I've ever seen. Originally issued in 1873-74 for use with the experimental rod bayonet Trapdoor Rifle, the tool proved to be so popular that it continued in service until replaced in the 1880s by the 1880 Hunting Knife. Also called in correspondence "The Hagner Tool", it was designed to give the infantryman a tool to throw up earthworks protection for himself (since he had no bayonet except for the rod bayonet in his rifle).

The leather of the scabbard is just excellent plus with 100% stitching and live leather. The hanger attachment is the leather loop variation - the one less commonly seen due to its sensitivity to wear and, if left untreated, its penchance for breaking off. This loop, however, is excellent and live. The face of the scabbard, at the throat, is stamped "US" and ""10" (a unit mark). The tool itself has a like new blade, very shiny and no damage nor pitting. The hilt is stamped "US" and the oak is the original light colour with 100% of the tung oil varnish. Other photos are available on request.

An excellent piece and of a quality never seen for sale at shows.
