Revolutionary War Sabre Strap Price: 195
Three decades ago, I bought a stirrup-hilted, American-manufactured horseman's sabre that had the original sabre strap still attached. I kept both pieces for many years but eventually added the strap to my growing collection of sabre straps and sword knots. It is full length and russet in colour, with most of the tassels on one end intact. It is quite a bit different than the relatively large sabre knots that followed it in the 1840s and later, but it is probably one of the few surviving specimens on the planet. It measures 8 3/4 in. long with an additional fold-over of 3/4 in. The fold at the top once held a small, mushroom-headed "button" that secured it to the sabre hilt. Of russet leather, decoratively stitched, it is 5/8 in. long and, amazingly, the stitching is intact and solid. The leather itself has softened with Pecard.
A rare piece that is not shown in any of the Rev. War books from major collections. Probably one of the rarest accoutrements.
