Excellent 4th Cavalry-Marked Pat. 1904 Saddle Surcingle Price: 225
This scarce saddle accoutrement was first shown in the 1904 Horse Equipments manual and was regulation until sometime before WW II. A long (96 inch) strap with a long leather billet that was used to give the saddle extra security when ridden in mountainous areas (i.e. it went around the saddle and horse in addition to the girth) and was also used in garrison to hold the horse cover in place.
This excellent specimen, of linen webbing, is stamped on the billet: "53 H 4", "2" (for size), and "ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL T.C." Rarely seen in collections and necessary to complete a Pat. 1904 Saddle. From my own collection.
