Rare Complete 1850s Dragoon Bridle Bit, Bridle, Reins
Price: 1050

No museum I know of has a Dragoon set like this. The bridle bit is the 1850s type shown in Fig. 13, Page 25 of BRIDLE BITS OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY, 1776-1945 by McPheeters and Dorsey. This brass-faced bit is approximately 25% shorter than earlier Dragoon bits. This bit was faced with brass on both sides of the branches and the lower bar but not the port. The bridle buckles are large brass box buckles and the chain is the original, pre-1859 style, iron curb chain. The buckles on the reins are unique horseshoe shape and were never brass faced. All leather is live and supple. All of the brass has a nice patina, including the bullseye bridle rosettes. The brow band is faced on the outside with enameled yellow leather for Cavalry. A few other views are available on request.

This set is a very nice one to round out a true Cavalry set and would be correct with a Ringgold, Grimsley or McClellan saddle. The brass bits were much desired by officers because they had more "flash". If desired, a copy of the referenced book will be provided to the purchaser of this fine, rare set.
