Excellent Military Saddle Valise
Price: 1100

This exact valise is shown and described at the top of the page on pg. 325 of THE AMERICAN MILITARY SADDLE, 1776-1945. Of dark brown leather, it is of the standard military configuration with three closing straps and brass box buckles with the original shield-shaped decorative tips on the closing straps. The center of the body has a sewn-on strap through which a cloak strap would pass to secure the valise to the cantle of the saddle. Overall dimensions are 18" x 6".

The obvious military use of this valise is shown in the attachment of two large (1 11/16" diameter) brass, domed octagonal decorations with the federal eagle, shield, riband and olive branch. Very nicely struck, these two devices (one on each end of the valise) appear to date from the Mexican War period. However, this valise could have served in both the Mexican War as well as the War Between the States and could have been used on a Ringgold, Grimsley or officer's McClellan Saddles.

A very, very nice valise that has been part of my personal reference collection for many years. Valises are quite scarce in any condition but one in this condition is exceptional.

I have a good photo of the end decorations if you don't have the Saddle Book.
