Military Style Black Leather Valise, c. 1840-1855 Price: 900
Shown and discussed on pg. 326 of THE AMERICAN MILITARY SADDLE, 1776-2945, this valise is the type used by Dragoons in the Mexican War and on the Frontier and went on to be used by officers in the War Between the States. It measures 17" x 6 3/8", has three closing straps, slightly domed endpieces with centered brass buttons. The body of thge valise has two retaining straps to hold two cloak straps from the cantle of the saddle. While the valise has all three closing straps, the center buckle and billet are now missing. A photo of one end of the valise is available on request. The valise is flexed and crazed overall (as you would expect from a soft leather valise) but it has almost no flaking and is live.
This valise would be proper for almost any US or Confederate military saddle through 1865. A scarce offering.
