1876 Cartridge Belt - .50 Calibre Price: 895
A rare belt of the Early Indian War period with only between 200-300 manufactured. In that period, where the army regulars were armed with .45/70 calibre carbines and rifles, the teamsters, some scouts and other civilian employees of the army were armed with both Sharps cartridge conversion (.50 cal.) carbines or 56/.50 Spencer Carbines. This is an excellent specimen of this very scarce belt and is both from my personal research collection and is the exact belt discussed and shown on pg. 254-255 of AMERICAN MILITARY AND NAVAL BELTS 1812-1902. A photo of the back of the belt is available on request if you don't have the cited reference book.
The belt is essentially in unused condition and has a bright "Watervliet Arsenal" stamp on the tongue as well as a bright "A.R. Smith" inspector's stamp.
This is one of the rare Indian War cartridge belts and a perfect companion to the Spencer or Sharps of the period.
